Who is Nir Eyal?

Nir Eyal is an author, speaker and consultant who writes about behavioral design, habits and attention. According to Wikipedia, he was born on February 19, 1980, in Hadera, Israel, moved to the Orlando, Florida area as a child, holds a B.A. from Emory University (2001) and an MBA from Stanford (2008), and after Stanford ran an online advertising company. His own site describes him as a former lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and at Stanford's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, and says he has invested in companies including Canva and Kahoot!.

He has published three books: Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products (2014), Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life (2019, winner of the 2019 OWL Award according to his site) and Beyond Belief: The Science-Backed Way to Stop Limiting Yourself and Achieve Breakthrough Results (Portfolio, March 10, 2026), co-written with Julie Li, whom his site names as his business partner.

He publishes through his website nirandfar.com, a newsletter his site says has more than 160,000 subscribers, a Substack, and a YouTube channel (@nirandfar) that showed 15.8K subscribers when read on September 14, 2026.

His paid training is sold under the Nir and Far brand as two self-paced online workshops. The Hooked Workshop teaches the Hooked Model through video lessons, exercises and interviews with product teams; its page lists a regular price of $1,049 and mentions a limited-time discount without showing the discounted amount, with 90 days of access. Becoming Indistractable covers focus, triggers and timeboxing through video lessons, quizzes and recordings of community Q&A sessions with Eyal; its offer page lists a regular price of $675, currently shown as $499. He also offers keynotes and in-company workshops (JPMorgan Chase, Standard Chartered and Google APAC are listed as clients) and one-on-one or company consulting; no fees are published for either, and both are requested through forms on his site.

On reputation, his public profile is tied to the debate over whether technology is addictive. Hooked became a reference for habit-forming design, and critics cited on Wikipedia argue that stressing personal responsibility deflects attention from product design; Eyal has argued in interviews, including a 2019 debate with Ezra Klein on Vox's podcast, that for most adults device overuse is not an addiction and that the answer is forethought and planning. A rulemaking petition to the FTC about design features used on children cites Hooked as a description of variable-reward techniques; no FTC enforcement action under his name was found, searched on September 14, 2026. No independent data on the number of workshop participants or their results was found.
