Who is Mike Matthews?

Mike Matthews, who also publishes as Michael Matthews, is an American fitness author and entrepreneur. He self-published his first book, Bigger Leaner Stronger, in January 2012, and later wrote Thinner Leaner Stronger for women, the cookbook The Shredded Chef, Muscle for Life for older and beginner trainees, and several companion workbooks. Legion Athletics describes him as a certified personal trainer; the certifying body is not named on that page. In a September 2020 episode of his podcast he said he was 36 and that, before fitness, he ran a small publishing business producing employee training programs, toward the end mostly for healthcare companies.

In 2014 he founded Legion Athletics, a sports supplement company. A 2020 FTC letter lists its address in McLean, Virginia; its website now gives a headquarters address in Clearwater, Florida. His older blog, Muscle for Life, was merged into legionathletics.com, and muscleforlife.com addresses now redirect there. Supplements are Legion's main product line and are not training, so this profile covers only his books and the coaching service.

His author page on Legion's site links to his Instagram (@muscleforlifefitness), X (@muscleforlife) and Facebook accounts, alongside Legion's company channels, including the YouTube channel @legionsupps. A YouTube channel titled Muscle for Life with Mike Matthews links out to Legion and to those accounts, but on September 14, 2026 neither Legion's site nor his podcast page linked back to it, so it is not listed here as his official channel. He hosted the Muscle for Life podcast for more than ten years and nearly 1,200 episodes, and on February 19, 2025 released an episode titled "The Final Episode (For Now)" announcing a pause.

What is sold today: his books, sold through Legion's online store and major retailers (on September 14, 2026 Legion listed Bigger Leaner Stronger at $12.49, shown as 50% off $24.99, and Muscle for Life at $14.99), and Legion's online body transformation coaching, a 90-day program with custom diet and training plans, weekly video or phone check-ins, messaging support, exercise form review and access to his books. The coaching page does not publish a price: prospective clients book a free consultation or take a quiz. The page does not say whether Matthews coaches clients himself; the PTDC profile describes his business as built without training clients in person.

Figures from his own material, with no independent verification located: "over 2 million books" sold (another Legion page says over 1.5 million copies), 5,010 coaching clients of whom 91% reached their goals, and a coaching guarantee of up to three extra months free. A 2020 profile by Lou Schuler in The PTDC, based on an interview with him, reported about $20 million in annual Legion sales and more than 30 employees and contractors; those figures also come from him.

On the regulatory record, the FTC published a warning letter dated April 21, 2020 addressed to Legion Athletics, Inc., not to Matthews personally, signed by the acting associate director of its Division of Advertising Practices. It stated that FTC staff had reviewed legionathletics.com in April 2020 and considered that three pages advertised the Immune supplement and the Triumph multivitamin as able to help prevent or treat COVID-19 without competent and reliable scientific evidence, and asked the company to stop those claims immediately, review its other product claims and report the actions taken within 48 hours. The letter does not name Matthews. No later FTC enforcement action against Legion or Matthews was found on ftc.gov, searched on September 14, 2026. No independent review of his coaching results was located. His exact birth date and where he currently lives were not confirmed.
