Layne Norton is an American nutrition scientist, powerlifter and former natural pro bodybuilder who publishes fitness and nutrition content under the Biolayne brand. According to his own website, he holds a BS in Biochemistry from Eckerd College and a PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Illinois, and was born in Evansville, Indiana, and is based in Tampa, Florida. His 2010 doctoral thesis at the University of Illinois dealt with leucine and the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis, and he co-authored related papers such as a 2009 study in The Journal of Nutrition. He is also known for PHAT (Power Hypertrophy Adaptive Training), a five-day program combining power and hypertrophy days that he distributes free as a PDF in exchange for an email address.
His website lists him as founder of Biolayne LLC and co-founder of Carbon Diet Coach, Outwork Nutrition (a supplement brand) and Physique Coaching Academy. Carbon's website names him and registered dietitian Keith Kraker as the app's creators; online sources describe Physique Coaching Academy as a certification he created with Dr. Bill Campbell.
He publishes on YouTube as @biolayne1, which showed 439,000 subscribers and about 1,200 videos when read on September 13, 2026, and on Instagram and X as @biolayne. He also hosts the Dr. Layne Norton Podcast and has been a guest on The Joe Rogan Experience and Huberman Lab.
What he sells: one-on-one online coaching through Team Biolayne, reached through an application and a free consultation, with no public price; two Biolayne subscriptions, Workout Builder and the REPS research review, each listed at $12.99 per month; the Carbon Diet Coach app, at $11.99 per month, $59.99 every six months or $99.99 per year; the Physique Coaching Academy certification, whose official price could not be read; and e-books sold on the Biolayne store, including Fat Loss Forever (co-written with Peter Baker), The Complete Contest Prep Guide and The Complete Reverse Dieting Guide, each listed at $59.99 in e-book form.
On the competitive side, his website lists wins at USAPL Nationals in 2014 and 2015 in the 93 kg class, an overall silver medal at the 2015 IPF World Championships and the 2022 IPF Masters 1 93 kg world title. The coaching pages say he has turned more than 70 clients pro, and Carbon's website says he has coached more than 1,700 clients since 2005. These are his own figures, with no independent source.
Reputation: in a court case in the High Court of Justice in England, on November 19, 2013, Justice David Bean issued an injunction against YouTuber Jason Blaha. It barred him from repeating claims that Norton used banned substances and that his research was bogus. Blaha took no part in the case. This is reported in a statement Norton published on his own website on January 14, 2014, which quotes the ruling; we did not find an independent report of the decision. No FTC action was found under his name or Biolayne's in a search of ftc.gov on September 13, 2026.
